Why “I have everything” is not a verdict
It usually means the person has already bought what they need. But joy comes not only from things: it is nice to get an experience, a tasty small thing or simply proof that someone thought of you. That is what to bet on.
Seven ideas
- Experiences. Tickets to a concert or a play, a workshop, a quest, a massage or spa voucher. Memories take no space.
- Quality treats and drinks. Good coffee, tea, honey, handmade chocolate: nice, and it disappears quickly without regret.
- A better version of an everyday thing. Something the person uses daily but would not buy better for themselves: a good pen, nice socks, coffee beans.
- A book, a course or a subscription. If you know the interests, it is a chance to try something new without extra things in the house.
- A personal gift. A photo book, a frame with a shared picture, a letter, a selection of shared memories. You cannot buy this in a shop.
- Help and time. Give a lift somewhere, help with a move, cook dinner: what there are never enough hands for.
- A charity donation. If you know the person cares about an initiative, you can donate in their name. Agree on it carefully so the person does not feel obliged.
How to understand what the person lacks
- Look at daily life: what they often buy, what they use, what they complain about.
- Ask mutual friends or close people. It is the quickest way.
- Look at their wishlist if there is one: it usually holds things the person has not yet dared to buy.
What better to avoid
- “One more” of an item the person already has: a mug, a scarf, a candle.
- Decor unrelated to their taste: it is easy to miss.
- Expensive things without being sure they are needed.
If you are playing Secret Santa and the budget is small, edible gifts work best: they will surely find a use.
