Who the game suits

Secret Santa works best in middle and upper grades, where children can choose a gift themselves and keep the secret. Younger classes need adult help: parents or the teacher.

Rules to agree on in advance

  1. Taking part is voluntary. Do not force anyone, and whoever does not want to play does not have to explain why.
  2. One small budget for everyone. For example, up to UAH 100-150: then the difference between gifts will not be noticeable.
  3. No expensive things or gadgets. Small things are better: stationery, stickers, treats, a board game.
  4. A clear date. Usually before the holidays or on a day when the whole class is together.
  5. A responsible adult. The class teacher or a parent committee member makes sure nobody is left without a gift.
  6. A spare gift. If someone is ill or absent, the teacher or the organizer hands the gift over.

How to run the draw

For younger classes the simplest way is to pull slips out of a hat. For older classes and a parents’ chat it is more convenient online: the draw needs no spreadsheets and the pair is known only to the person who got it. Bazhanka requires an account, so agree on who helps with registration. Step by step: Secret Santa online.

Gift ideas for schoolchildren

  • A set of stickers, sticky notes or bookmarks.
  • A notebook or a diary with an interesting cover.
  • Stationery: nice pens, markers, a pencil case.
  • Treats: chocolate, cookies, sweets.
  • A small board game or a puzzle.
  • A handmade card or bracelet.

How to avoid hurt feelings

  • Do not discuss out loud who gave what and how much it cost.
  • Agree that a handmade gift is just as valuable.
  • Remember children the class knows less: make sure they get an attentive match.
  • Keep gifts anonymous until the children decide to reveal themselves.

Answers about Secret Santa

Frequently asked questions

What is Secret Santa?

It is a gift exchange inside a group: everyone secretly prepares a gift for one other person and stays anonymous until the gift is handed over. The organizer takes part like everyone else.

Is it Secret Santa or Secret Saint Nicholas?

It is the same game with different names. “Secret Santa” is the common English name and “Secret Saint Nicholas” (Таємний Миколай) suits the Ukrainian December holidays. In Bazhanka the mode is called Secret Santa and the rules are the same.

Can I run Secret Santa online for free?

Yes. Create a group in Bazhanka, invite members by email or by link and start the draw: playing is free. Members create an account, then buy and hand over the gifts themselves.

How many people do we need?

At least four, including the organizer. With fewer people the matches are too easy to guess.

Does the organizer see who gives to whom?

No. Everyone, the organizer included, sees only the person they give to. Nobody sees the whole draw.

What happens if someone leaves the game?

Before the start the person simply leaves the roster. After the draw Bazhanka repeats it automatically for the rest if at least three members remain. If only two are left, the game is canceled.
