Family wishlists: how not to give the same thing and not ask every time

In a big family the same thing repeats for every holiday: two people bought the same thing, and a third did not know what already existed. A shared group with lists removes this without any spreadsheets.

Why gifts get duplicated in a family

People ask each other separately, in different chats and at different times. The answers do not match, and nobody sees who buys what. The result: two identical gifts or none of the expected one.

What it looks like in a group

  • Everyone in the family creates their own list: from small things to bigger wishes.
  • All group members see each other’s lists in one place.
  • Whoever plans to give something reserves the wish. The others see it is already taken.
  • The list owner sees that someone has chosen a gift but does not know who. The surprise stays.

What to add to a family list

Things at different prices: something under UAH 300, something medium and a few big dreams to chip in for. It helps to put the size, color or model in a note so relatives do not guess. More on filling it: what to put in a wishlist.

How to chip in for a big gift

Agree together who takes on the purchase and write about it in the group. A reservation will show the others that the gift has been chosen, and the rest pass their money to whoever buys.

If children want their own list too

Children can have their own list under the supervision of an adult who creates it in an account and adds wishes together with the child. That way grandparents see what the child really wants and do not buy extras.

Answers about the Friends & family group

Frequently asked questions

What is a Friends & family group?

It is a shared space for your close circle: everyone has their own wishlists, and the other members see them and can reserve gifts. No draw and no obligatory rules: you decide who gives what to whom.

How much does it cost?

Using a group is free. Create a group, invite people by email or by link and add your lists.

Who sees the lists in a group?

Only the members. To let someone see the lists you have to invite them to the group. Lists of this mode are not opened to outsiders by a link.

Do I see who reserved my gift?

No. You only see that a wish is reserved, not by whom. In the list settings the reservation marks can be hidden completely to keep the surprise.

How many lists can each member have?

As many as needed: separate lists for a birthday, a housewarming or the holidays keep ideas apart. Group members see all the lists added to the group.

How is a group different from Secret Santa?

In a Friends & family group everyone chooses what to give and sees all the lists. Secret Santa is a game with a draw where everyone prepares a gift for one person picked at random. You can use both modes, but in separate groups.
